VCR X86 X64 13.10.2011 20 The tradition of VHS video cassettes has been in decline for some time now with the rise of DVD and Blu-Ray. This is because DVDs and Blu-Ray discs can hold more data than VHS tapes, prices have fallen to within reach, and technology has evolved to include digital downloads. Even still, there are many people who prefer the quality that cassette formats offer over other forms of media storage, so it’s good to know what you’re getting into when you decide to buy one. It is also good to know a few things about used cassette players, in case you wish to sell your old video recorder. What is a cassette player? A cassette player is a device that plays prerecorded videotapes or digital files in VHS or Beta format, and it does so by the means of two small round metallic needles that read out the information from the magnetic tape. In most cases, these “tapes” are actually plastic discs called “DVDs”. The cassette player contains two sets of components. The first set includes the DVD drive, which can contain either a VHS recording mechanism or a CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive (a drive that records digital files to play back on your computer or in your car). The second set of components includes the viewing screen and controls. The viewing screen shows your video tape’s contents, while the controls allow you to pause, rewind, fast-forward, and change channels. Advantages to owning a cassette player If you decide that you like having tapes for your video recorders, there are some advantages to owning one. The most important of these is the ability to watch your favorite tapes at any time. Whether you’re sick of watching soap operas on television or want to process a videotape, a cassette player is perfect for this purpose. This comes in handy in a few situations, too. For one thing, you can watch videos when it’s inconvenient for you to do so on your regular TV screen. For another, if you have friends over and they ask what they can watch on video that’s not network television or cable shows, you can show them how easy it is to use their own cassette players without having to lug around a hard drive full of digital files from your computer. Also, if you’re on vacation and you want to watch a show you recorded home on your cassette player, it’s much more convenient. VHS versus Beta versus DVD versus Blu-Ray versus digital downloads? VHS and Beta cartridges were used alongside each other in the early days of video recording technology because both types of cassettes offered advantages that the other did not. An example of this is how Beta cartridges were more easily edited than VHS tapes. On the flip side, VHS tapes could be longer than Beta tapes – so long, in fact, that it would take many discs to hold an entire movie. VCR x86 x64 13.10.2011 20 cfa1e77820
